Bullying is everywhere

School should be a place of learning. A place where young people develop together. However, for every sixth student in Germany, school is a place of fear. Bullying is becoming an ever-increasing problem that makes learning almost impossible in many educational institutions. While bullying is not a new phenomenon, the levels of targeted bullying seem to be increasing in severity these days. Bullying is a form of violence directed against a person in an overt, but sometimes subtle form. The aim of the perpetrators is to "get ready" the victim. The malicious actions have many faces and range from direct insults, threats and teasing to more subliminal methods such as exclusion or the spreading of rumors. This behavior can be seen even in very young schoolchildren and bullying is by no means only a problem in secondary schools. There are already victims of bullying among elementary school students who are excluded and systematically teased by their classmates.


Open your eyes – this is how you recognize bullying
Because bullying can occur in many forms and at all ages, it is not always easy to tell when someone is being bullied. Apart from obvious signs, such as physical injuries through violence or self-harm, parents often hardly notice the subtle bullying through exclusion and rumors. As a parent, you should therefore be sensitive to changes and abnormalities in your own children.


Possible signs that children/adolescents are victims of bullying:
*Sudden drop in performance at school
*They no longer want to go to school *Psychosomatic complaints such as abdominal pain, nausea
*They retire
*They have nightmares, sleep worse
*Belongings are missing/damaged, money disappears
*they are lonely, don't invite friends over.

My child is a victim - what should I do?
If, as a parent, you notice any abnormalities in your child that indicate that it could be a victim of bullying, the most important thing is not to look the other way. You should actively ask, show interest and offer help. It is advisable to involve the school in specific cases of bullying. Teachers and school management should definitely be informed and help to solve the problem. The affected child must feel the support of the family and know that they are not alone.

 

My child is a perpetrator - what should I do?
Bullying is bad for the victims and their parents too. But what to do if your own child is not a victim but a perpetrator? Students who bully often seek recognition. Compensating for one's own insecurity is often behind the actions. If your child is bullying, you should actively ask about it and address the problem. It may be possible to find dissatisfaction in the child that can be tackled together. If in doubt, get help from the school. Class teachers, head teachers or social workers can often advise and mediate in this situation.

Bullying is bad for the victims and their parents. But what to do if the child is not victims but perpetrators? Students who want to harass often achieve recognition. Often, a compensating of its own uncertainty behind the acts. If child bullies, you should ask here actively and address the problem. May be you can find dissatisfactions of the child, against which you can tackle together. In case of doubt you should seek help at school. Often, class teachers, principals or even social workers can advise in this situation and convey.
